Hot Fridays

What makes your venue the Best Gastropub in New Zealand?

Welcome to Hot Fridays, formerly known as Morriesons—an iconic establishment with a rich history in the heart of Hawera. Under new ownership since late November 2023, we have undergone a thrilling transformation that has infused a fresh energy into this beloved space.

Our passion for preserving the essence of Ronald Hugh Morrieson's legacy is reflected in every aspect of Hot Fridays. The name itself, an homage to Morrieson's iconic work, "Came a Hot Friday," sets the tone for an exciting and unique experience.

The atmosphere at Hot Fridays is a reflection of our dedication to crafting a warm and inviting space. Envision red exposed bricks, mood lighting, amber glass, and charming weather boards inside. This intentional blend of elements creates a distinctive ambiance that resonates with locals, turning Hot Fridays into their preferred second home.

To enhance the experience, we've incorporated dart boards for some friendly competition and a large screen that seamlessly fades into the dark walls, ensuring you enjoy your favorite sports without feeling the typical sports bar vibes. At Hot Fridays, our goal is to provide a comfortable and inclusive setting where everyone can unwind and make lasting memories.

We believe in more than just serving great food and drinks, we're creating a community hub. Whether you're a long-time resident or a newcomer to Hawera, we invite you to be a part of our journey. Join us for good times, delicious offerings, and an atmosphere that resonates with the vibrant spirit of our town.

Describe the experience your customers have at your establishment – what is your food and beverage offering and why do people come back for more?

It's a home away from home, with a warm friendly greeting, tasty food, cold beers, and the best vibe in town. Our establishment goes beyond the conventional dining experience; it's a place where every visitor becomes part of a larger family. The inviting atmosphere, combined with our commitment to exceptional service, fosters a sense of belonging.

The Generous portions ensure even the seasoned eaters are well and truly happy. Also offering delicious bar snacks and platters which go down well with a cold beer or wine.

Tell us how you showcase NZ produce / offerings? Does your menu change with the season and how is it locally influenced. How do you accommodate allergy and dietary requirements?

As we only opened Late November we have not had the chance to change with the seasons yet, but we looking into menus at the moment to compliment the weather. Hot Fridays has a good selection of GF & Dairy free options and we are always accommodating where we can be. Our chef runs a separate Celiac fryer and work station in our kitchen. We think supporting NZ products and even more so, local Taranaki products, is very important and the brand we are building.

What are your key points of difference and how have you managed to deliver them?

When we initially acquired the venue, we lacked any prior experience or knowledge in the hospitality industry. However, this unfamiliarity became an asset, allowing us to break free from traditional norms and create an atmosphere that goes beyond the ordinary. Our decision to gut, renovate, and rebrand was guided solely by our instincts and preferences, steering clear of any rule book or norm. This unconventional approach has resulted in a remarkable and multifaceted ambiance, offering patrons an experience that transcends the boundaries of typical bar settings in our area at least.

Please describe your commitment to sustainability.

We are slowly getting though the things we want to to make us more sustainable, this started in our recent makeover by adding insulation to the building, changing all lights to LEDs and fixing water leaks that had been dripping for years. Now we are open, we have included Biodegradable packaging and timers on lights where they always get left on. I think if its saving green while going green, its a win win.

Please describe how you create ambience.

This was a main focus for our renovation. We knew we had to nail this aspect as we felt no other local bar or restaurant had a point of difference so we replaced every light with a dimmable/colour changing led. added a full in-ceiling sound system, exposed a covered up brick wall, added plants, eclectic decor and most importantly friendly staff. We even have a large Goldfish tank which grabs the attention of all types of guests and becomes a talking point for all.
